Beyond The Canvas Creations

I'm a self-taught mixed media artist and digital designer based in downtown Toronto.

Over the past 5 years, I have developed a love for creating immersive, eye-catching, and other-worldly pieces using whatever materials I can.

Hi,  I'm Evan Rees

My Tears Dry On Their Own

Spray Paint on 20" x 24" canvas

This piece was inspired by Amy Winehouse, one of the most moving, haunting, and beautiful souls in the creative industry. Amy always had a whimsical, mysterious, and playful element to her songs and her personality that I wanted to capture in this piece.

I wanted to highlight those parts of herself that made her such a force of nature, while recognizing the haunting, painful, and sorrowful elements of being a creative.

Molten Jewels

Mixed Media on 2 ' x 4 ' canvas

Lava has always captivated me, with its mesmerizing, flowing state, the geological wonders it creates and the beauty in its force.

I used a variety of different recycled fabric soaked in plaster and texture paste to create the rock-like effect, and placed a light behind the piece to shine through the resin and glow like lava, as well as incorporating a light-strip into the folds of the plaster-cloth.

Mother Nature

Mixed  Media on 20" x 30" canvas

Nature has been a common theme in my work, as I marvel at the wonders of this world. To conceptualize it, I wanted to use Mother Nature as inspiration. A protective, powerful, fierce force, but caring, beautiful, and harmonious.

Through the use of foam to build out a torso, mannequin arms, clay, and resin, her shape came together over the course of about 3 months. I wanted to ground the sculpture on canvas to have it immersive and coming out towards the observer.

Fire and Ice

Mixed Media on 2' x' 4' Canvas

Contrast has always been something inevitable in life, and that has always intrigued me. Even in my art, I strive to use texture and colours and materials to create contrast and bring the piece to the next level.

I wanted to lean into this as a theme, using fire and ice as the main subjects. The ebb and flow of opposing forces, both vital, but locked in an endless, passionate, dancing fight.
