I remember growing up with Amy Winehouse playing on Much and MTV, listening to her songs in my early teens, and loving the soul, the raw rasp, and the emotion and whimsy in her voice and lyrics.
The 2023 biopic Back To Black inspired me to create something that was emblematic of her style and sound, and conveyed the mystery and heartache that underscored her life and career.
During a period of hyperfixation, and listening to her albums on repeat, I began brainstorming how to create a piece in my style.
My background in digital design allowed me to create a template on Figma to make stencils to translate it to canvas.
After making the outlines and structure using the stencils and spray paint, I went in and added detailing with acrylic paint, and UV resin, and jewellery to make it more 3D. Using black wire for the hair woven into the black, I wanted to make the piece more immersive and raw.
