The Process

The initial stages of the process were more free form and rough. I knew that I wanted to create lava and rocky textured landscape. This was one of the first pieces I worked on involving soaking cloth in plaster, and it was one my favourite parts of the process by far!

Once I had the plaster-soaked cloth laid out on the canvas in the general structure I wanted, it was time to cut the sections out for the lava, and to paint the landscape black.

Over time, the piece took shape as I added more red elements using mica powder and spray paint, and gold leaf and wax to create a more smooth contrast against the black.
